PONTYPRIDD VETS TOUR 2010
Pontypridd Vets rugby team headed for Kent to compete in the Ashford RFC 2010 Veterans Rugby Tournament. A small squad of just 17 made the trip consisting of a number of first team ex - players like Justyn Marshman and Barry Jones, a number of youth team ex - players like Jamie Edwards, Steve Davies, Craig Pritchard and Robert Gray as well as numerous Pontypridd RFC club coaches at both mini rugby and junior rugby level, the team was captained by past player and tour organiser Craig Pritchard. The tour was classed as a complete triumph with a future tournament in Belgium in June 2011 already planned.
Pontypridd Veterans 7 v Dover Veterans 0
Tensions were high for the first ever Pontypridd Vets rugby game. The first half developed into a tough up front battle with both sets of forwards refusing to give an inch, a number of scuffles broke out amongst the packs proving that veterans rugby is always a competitive environment. The deadlock was broken mid way through the first half when a perfectly executed backs move started by scrum half Lee Huxtable led to a sharp break from inside centre Jamie Edwards, he fed ex Ponty first team player Justyn Marshman who went over for a try, the conversion was stroked over from wide by Ian Vining.
Even though Ponty controlled the majority of the second half the empahasis was certainly on defence, mid way through the second half a brawl developed due to over exuberant rucking by the Ponty forwards, both packs recieved a stern takling to by the ref. This seemed to settle things down a bit and after more strong tackling particularly by Robert Gray and Steve Davies in the Ponty back row the team held out for the all important first win. Ponty Vets man of the match for his robust defence was blind side flanker Robert Gray.

Ponty felt much more confident going into the second game and after a passionate and motivational pre match team talk by Ian Vining and captain Craig Pritchard the team were once again ready to take to the field. Some class rugby followed with all the previous weeks training coming to fruition, particularly in the backs with Mark Davies, Richard Barnes, Jason Mahoney and Steve Smith all prominent.
The first try came from a classical backplay miss 1 move, creating space for second row hardman Phillip Davies to plummet over from the second phase. By now open side flanker Barry Jones (ex Wales Youth) was starting to have an influence on the game and was again ever present to finish off another lovely backs break made by classy inside centre Jamie Edwards, the conversion was converted under the posts by Ian Vining.
The only downside to the game was a rib injury to Ponty loose head prop Grant Radcliffe, this was to be the end of his tournament, however, the off pitch contribution he made was invaluable! After winning their 2 pool matches Ponty Vets were now through to a semi final showdown with pre tournament favourites Lordswood RFC Veterans. By now the Kent Welsh ex-pat community were starting to gather and "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, Ponty, Ponty" was beginning to revurbirate around the ground. Ponty Vets man of the match was open side flanker Barry Jones who was perpetual motion itself.

After all the hype the semi final turned out to be a hugely one sided affair. Everything clicked for Ponty who ran out easy winners. Ian Vining's vision controlled things at outside half while stroking over 4 out of 5 conversions. Once again the backs enjoyed acres of space and throughout the game displayed their class, particularly in the centre where speedster Justyn Marshman went over for 2 tries, more tries followed from Jamie Edwards and Mark Davies before link man Barry Jones went over for his second try of the tournament.
The platform created by the forwards cannot be under estimated though, Tony Hill, Craig Pritchard, Robert Gray, energetic hooker Dai Slade and Steven Davies all imposed themselves with a massive physical contribution and worked well with the mecurial Lee Huxtable at scrum half. After a long journey and substanital commitment Ponty Vets had achieved their goal and reached the final.
However, warning signs were starting to appear and a number of players were starting to look tired, a small squad of only 17 meant the rolling sub system could not be fully used, and by now the treatment table was full of players needing injuries tended to, the physicality displayed by the Ponty forwards was beginning to take it's toll. Ponty Vets man of the match for his silky running at outside centre Justyn Marshman.
Pontypridd Veterans 0 v Old Colfeians Veterans RFC 14
Despite great support from the side lines and another em-passioned pre match speech by inspirational leaders Ian Vining and Craig Pritchard the game started poorly. Almost from the kick off a Ponty backs move went wrong, a long pass from outside half Ian Vining was intercepted by the opposition centre for an easy try under Ponty's posts.
By now the Ponty pack were looking tired and for the first time in the tournament failed to dominate the opposition pack. Towards the end of the first half they did have an opportunity to square the game after inside centre Jamie Edwards made another seering break only to then pull up with a hamstring injury which ended his game. At half time the Ponty players tried to rally but they had just ran out of gas and another try mid way through the second half for Old Colfeians effectively sealed the game.
Ponty Vets man of the match in the final was a joint award to both Tony Hill and Steve Davies for their outstanding attitude and commitment.
Despite this, the tournament was a huge success and future appearances for the Ponty Vets team are guaranteed. The Pontypridd Veterans player of the tournament was the teams top try scorer Justyn Marshman.
The squad would like to thank Paul Woodman for his invaluable role as Team Manager, Richard Barnes for providing the kits and trip organiser and captain Craig Pritchard. Special thanks also to Sharon Green at Valleys Education who provided and sponsored the teams after match kit.
